Summary
By 2050 according to the WHO (World Health Organization), 110 million people will be affected by Dementia. Ecuador will see among the ranks of its patients as well as pathologies of underdevelopment, diseases related to the longest life expectancy.
We carried out a cross-sectional descriptive study in an IESS health facility in Cuenca, 391 participants signed an informed consent and answered a form to define the demographic conditions of the group studied and determine the possible factors of associated risks. His mental state was studied using the Minimental-test tool (MMSE) and the comorbidity of depression through the Yesabage screening test; the data was analyzed with SPSS 15 for Windows. The average age of the group was 70 years, 84% were women and 97% residents of the urban area of Cuenca. Through the application of the MMSE, 17.1% presented cognitive deterioration with RR of 3.81 for ages 65 and older and female sex Chronic diseases such as diabetes and osteoarthritis were the most common comorbidities
frequent with statistical association for risk. High blood pressure, COPD, etc., do not showed statistical association. 40.9% of the group showed positive traits for depression showing serious character in 37.5%.
